Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott attended her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. In addition to working two part-time jobs, Scott also studied secondary teaching at Temple University. She wanted to be the high school's English teacher. She had a dream of becoming an English teacher in high school ended when she dropped out of school. Her first job was as a spoken word artist who performed her own works in live poetry readings. She later joined forces to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They ended up collaborating as well as co-writing You Got Me. At the Roots show she made her debut to be an artist. Then, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Also, she was performers in The Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent. She was the first artist to be signed with Hidden Beach Recordings.
